Science and technology don’t exist in a vacuum. They shape, and are shaped by, culture, politics,
ethics, power, and inequality.
The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Certificate provides students with an
interdisciplinary framework to critically examine how scientific knowledge and technological
innovation influence social change. Students learn to evaluate emerging technologies like
artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cyberwarfare, and digital media through ethical, historical,
and sociological perspectives.
This certificate bridges the social sciences and humanities and prepares students to think
critically about equity, access, responsibility, and global impact in a rapidly evolving world.
Total Credit Hours: 15
• 3 credit hours required core course

Student Learning Outcomes
Students completing the STS Certificate will be able to:
• Analyze how social, political, and economic forces shape scientific and technological
development
• Evaluate ethical and policy implications of emerging technologies
• Apply interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, history, philosophy, anthropology,
political science, psychology, and communication
• Communicate complex technology-related issues clearly across academic and public audiences
• Critically engage with issues of power, inequality, global diversity, and representation in
science and technology
Program Requirements
• Total Semester Hours Required: 15
• No foreign language requirement
• No credit by exam (TSD, military credit)
• Internship, Independent Study, or Independent Research credits may not be used
• At least 12 credit hours must be earned at UCF
• Course substitutions require approval from the Department of Sociology Undergraduate
